Focusing on the fundamental science of thermodynamic and mechanistic factors controlling nanophase Mn oxide mineral phase persistence or transformation. Some interesting factors include nanoscale effects as we travel from the bulk scale down into the nano-regime, which include surface area, surface energy differences between redox species that share redox phase equilibrium, and strongly associated surface water.
